"Hollywood" is a word, rich with many meanings. It is a place, it is an industry. It evokes images of tall, swaying palm trees and stars on sidewalks. You think "movie stars", "glamour" and "excitement"! In Los Angeles, Hollywood is renowned for its exclusive nightlife and sensational Sunday Farmers Market, amazing movie theaters and numerous "industry"– related educational institutions.
For many of us, though, Hollywood is also our home, our ´hood´, the place where we earn a living and send our kids to school. The Hollywood HD-OD project, one of four national pilot sites, was established in 2008 in Hollywood by a small group of community leaders and community-based organizations, in partnership with a local governmental agency. A lot of things have changed here over the last 10 years or so, especially since the subway system arrived. We want to understand and shape the changes that are happening in our community, and make sure that the people who live and work here now, benefit from the opportunities that are created by change in the future.
Through the HD-OD project, we hope to articulate the 21st century vision for our community, the small town within a big city with a unique presence in everyone´s mind.
